  About Silk  >>    Spun Silk

Spunsilk:Spunsilk is woven from the threads from the ends of the cocoons, which are too short to be unwound. As suggested by the name, spun silk is produced through a spinning process similar to spinning wool.
The threads must first be prepared for the spinning process in the following four steps:
1. Boiling
Die Seidenfasern werden abgekocht.
2. Drying
Die Seidenfasern werden getrocknet.
3. Cutting
Die Fasern werden auf 50-150 mm Länge gebracht.
4. Bundling

The threads are checked for impurities. (polyethylene from the transport sacks, for instance) Then they go through several cycles of combing. The resulting batch of fibres is called the top. The fibers are then stretched, spun, and singed.

The resulting silk yarn is softer and more supple when compared to normal silk threads, but not as shiny. Typically, fabrics such as fuji are woven from this yarn, and the yarn can be woven into other fine-knit fabrics.

Silk fabrics of mixed fibers consist nearly always of spunsilk. The silk tops are combed together with other fibers and then spun.

The threads are then prepared for spinning by trimming them to a length of 50 -150 mm. Those threads which are less than 50 mm in length are combed out, and then used to produce Bourette Silk in a separate process.
